چکیده

Thermal plasma vitrification is a successfully used technology to treat and recycle hazardous wastes. High plasma temperatures enable to destroy complex molecules and to encapsulate the toxic elements in a non-leaching glass or ceramic matrix, obtaining nonhazardous wastes with large volume reductions. In this work, hazardous incinerator residues (bottom and fly ashes) have been treated by means of a laboratory scale radiofrequency (RF) thermal plasma source with the addition of coarse scraps of glass from dismantled fluorescent lamps. The obtained samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy analysis (SEM), energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and leaching tests. The latter showed that toxic elements were completely encapsulated in the glass matrix, with release values below the law limits. Results of this work demonstrate the feasibility of bottom and fly ash vitrification in a batch of glass scraps from dismantled fluorescent lamps and can also provide useful insights for the optimization of vitrification processes carried out by the more widespread arc plasma furnaces.

Structure, chemical durability and crystallization behavior of incinerator-based glassy systems

Vitrification by melting is being proposed as a convenient method to solidify different kinds of silicate and other oxide-based inorganic wastes. Incinerator bottom and fly ashes have been mixed with glass cullet, feldspar and clay by-products as melting fluxing agents. Washing, drying, and grinding pre-treatments followed by melting at 1450 C lead to the formation of glasses and glass-ceramics...

Utilisation of two-stage waste incinerator bottom ash as a cement substitute in concrete

Waste incineration still seems to be an essential technology in the concept of integrated waste management. However, the desirable quantity of waste incineration residue needs to be as low as possible. Therefore, related optimization of two-stage waste incineration technology has been performed with the main goal of producing lower amounts of boiler ash, fly ash and flue gas-treatment residue, ...

The potential of recycling and reusing municipal solid waste incinerator ash in Taiwan.

By 2004, there were 19 municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWI) with a total yearly treatment capacity of 7.72 million tons in service in Taiwan. All 19 incinerators operated daily to generate about 1.05 million tons of incinerator ash, including bottom ash and stabilized fly ash in 2003, and the average ash yield is 18.67%. The total number of incinerators is expected to increase to 27, servi...

Vitrification of Bottom Ash from A VR MSW incinerators

During incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW), various environmentally harmful elements and heavy metals are liberated either into bottom ash, or carried away with the off-gases and subsequently trapped in f ly ash. If these minor but harmf itl elements are not properly isolated and immobilized, it can lead to secondary environmental pol/ution to the air, soil and water. The stricter envi...

Environmental assessment of incinerator residue utilisation.

Incineration ashes may be treated either as a waste to be dumped in landfill, or as a resource that is suitable for re-use. In order to choose the best management scenario, knowledge is needed on the potential environmental impact that may be expected, including not only local, but also regional and global impact. In this study, A life cycle assessment (LCA) based approach was outlined for envi...
